DALLAS (AP)—A police officer was placed on administrative leave Thursday over a traffic stop involving an NFL player whom he kept in a hospital parking lot and threatened to arrest while his mother-in-law died inside the building.

Officer Robert Powell also drew his gun during the March 18 incident involving Houston Texans running back Ryan Moats in the Dallas suburb of Plano, police said.

“I can screw you over,” he said at one point in the videotaped incident. When another officer came with word that Moats’ mother-in-law was indeed dying, Powell’s response was: “All right. I’m almost done.”

Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle apologized to the family and announced that Powell would be on paid leave pending an internal investigation. (more…)

How to Dress for Success – In the Corporate World

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Here are some tips to help women look and feel professional:

1. Resist the temptation to ditch your pantyhose, even if your company’s dress code doesn’t require them. Bare legs definitely don’t convey a professional look.

2. Regular sandals and open-toed shoes—worn with toeless stockings—are usually acceptable, but flip-flops, toe-post sandals and the like are not.

3. Tall and lean? Choose horizontal patterns in your jackets. A windowpane or glen-plaid jacket with a solid trouser or skirt will break up the vertical line and make you appear shorter.

4. Full-figured? Then consider a side-zipped trouser with a wide straight leg that skims over your body. Choose a jacket cut to just below your waist, to make your legs look longer than your torso. (more…)

CIA Turns to Mainstream Media for Recruiting

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

cia-sealThe CIA is advertising for a few good spies.

The Central Intelligence Agency is running radio recruitment spots for its National Clandestine Service unit, and it’s not the first time the covert group has turned to mainstream media to drum up interest. The CIA has in the past run a TV campaign on cable stations such as Discovery and has as a presence on the social-networking site Facebook.

Nothing new
Surprised? Don’t be. The supersecret spy agency is following in the footsteps of more groups than just its military counterparts. “CIA, as well as other intelligence agencies such as NSA [the National Security Agency], have advertised in the media off and on for many years,” said Richard K. Betts, a specialist on national-security policy and military strategy at Columbia University and a former consultant to the CIA.

Good Web TV Meets Resistance

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

WHAT IS IT? A New York-based start-up that makes free, open-source software that turns your computer into the equivalent of a powerful set-top box that can play anything from Hulu to iTunes to videos saved on your hard drive. Furthermore, it’s formatted for the big screen, meaning it makes the PC-to-TV connection even more appealing, and, with a handy app, it turns your iPhone into a remote.

WHO’S BACKING IT: Boxee was founded in 2007 by CEO Avner Ronen and has offices in New York and Israel. In November it received $4 million from Union Square Ventures’ Fred Wilson and Spark Capital’s Bijan Sabet. Both joined the board. (more…)

Why Facebook is Hating on Twitter

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

face-twitterDid Twitter just make Facebook blink? If not, why did Facebook suddenly get so much more Twitter-like?

Indeed, mighty Facebook, steaming toward 120 million worldwide users, pulling away from MySpace and even nudging Google on its axis, started emulating key functions of Twitter earlier in March after a redesign made status updates central and immediate.

Last week Facebook moved further into Twitter territory by allowing users to open their profiles — and status updates — to the public, letting users to speak to people who follow them but whom they don’t necessarily know. In other words, like Twitter. (more…)

Soul Train Boss Cops A Plea in Domestic Case

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

Don Cornelius

UPDATE: Cornelius was sentenced to three years’ probation after pleading no contest to one count of corporeal injury resulting in traumatic condition of a spouse stemming from his October arrest.

He was also fined $1,000; ordered to perform 300 hours of community service and complete a 52-week domestic violence treatment program; banned from possessing, owning or using deadly weapons or threatening violence against any person, particularly his wife; and ordered to stay at least 100 yards away from the Mulholland estate where the attack took place.

As part of the plea deal, four other misdemeanor charges were dropped.

You can bet your last money, it’s gonna be an interesting court fight, honey.

Erstwhile Soul Train ringmaster Don Cornelius has been charged with multiple misdemeanors for last month’s domestic-violence arrest.

The 72-year-old showbiz vet faces three counts of spousal battery, one count of dissuading a witness from making a police report and one count of assault with a deadly weapon—each charge carries a maximum sentence of one year in county jail.

Cornelius is due to appear in court later today to enter his plea, according to Los Angeles City Attorney spokesman Frank Mateljan.

E! News has also learned that the charges actually stem from not one, but two separate run-ins with his wife, Victoria.

The first incident took place in July 2007, but he was not initially charged. Then, on Oct. 17 police responded to a 911 call at his home and took him into custody. Cornelius remains free on $50,000 bail.
