Eat More Often to Keep Your Metabolism Up

It’s true: the act of eating – in and of itself – actually burns calories. Digesting and absorbing food accounts for as much as 10 percent of your metabolic rate. If you’re trying to lose or maintain weight, here’s how to use this to your advantage:

  • EAT EVERY 3 TO 4 HOURS. Eating frequent meals keeps your body working throughout the day.
  • KEEP PORTION SIZES SMALL. If you’re eating frequently, of course, you’ll need to keep your overall daily calorie intake under control.
  • EAT BREAKFAST. It gets your metabolism up and running. If you make lunch your first meal of the day, you’ve missed out on an opportunity to stoke up your metabolism
  • DON’T SKIP MEALS. Your metabolism can actually slow down, leaving you more prone to store fat by the time the day is through. When you eat frequently, you’re more likely to store energy as muscle.

Emmy Award-winning actress Bea Arthur, best known as star of the hit TV comedies “Maude” and “Golden Girls,” has died at age 86, entertainment news websites reported on Saturday.

Arthur, a longtime stage actress whose comic timing and deadpan delivery were a perfect fit for her sharp-tongued roles on the two series, died of cancer at her Los Angeles home, celebrity website TMZ reported.

Representatives for the actress, who won best-actress Emmys — America’s top television award — for “Maude” and “Golden Girls,” could not immediately be reached for comment. (more…)

De La Soul Finds an Unusual Music Partner – Nike

De LA Soul

In 1993, Prince made a series of public appearances with the word “slave” scrawled across his cheek, a not-so-silent protest against the demands of his label, Warner Brothers Records.

Since then, artists from Radiohead to The Eagles have eschewed the major players to release full-length albums, and now a group no less influential has followed suit. But they’re not going it alone.

For their first collection of new material in half a decade, legendary hip-hop trio De La Soul chose to work with Nike instead of a Big Four record label or even an indie.

For their new 44-minute workout LP, “Are You in?: Nike+ Original Run,” arriving in the iTunes Store tomorrow, the 20-year music veterans said they were never looking for a brand to support them; they merely found a generous partner who also wanted to be a creative collaborator. Or vice versa. (more…)

Monday, April 27th, 2009

A Swiss insurance worker lost her job after surfing popular social network site Facebook while off sick, her employer said on Friday.

The woman said she could not work in front of a computer as she needed to lie in the dark but was then seen to be active on Facebook, which insurer Nationale Suisse said in a statement had destroyed its trust in the employee.

Cell phone vital, air conditioning not so much

Monday, April 27th, 2009

cell_phoneWhat would you give up first, air conditioning or your cell phones?

In tough economic times with people looking to cut costs many Americans said a cell phone or computer are must-have items and regard a clothes dryers, air conditioner and microwave as less of a necessity, according to survey by the Pew Research Center.

“A relative newcomer in the everyday lives of most Americans, the cell phones is among a handful of newer gadgets that have held their own on the necessity scale from 2006 to 2009,” Pew researchers said.

The number of people who said microwaves were a necessity for their homes fell 21 percentage points in 2009 from 2006. Air conditioners dropped 16 points while dishwashers slumped 14 points, the poll showed. (more…)

Teens, Too, Are Tightening Budgets

Monday, April 27th, 2009

In a recession, one group can usually be counted on to keep spending: teens. Their parents often pick up the tab for necessities, leaving them free to spend the income they earn from part-time jobs and birthday money from grandma on themselves. But in this downturn, a rather surprising phenomenon is emerging: tight-fisted teens.

According to research from Piper Jaffray, teens are becoming more attuned to the pinch on household budgets from the economy, which is having a “dramatic impact” on the $125 billion the demographic spends each year. Teens generally have about $5,000 a year burning a hole in their pockets, but they are spending about 14% less this spring than in spring ’08. (more…)

Asher Roth – We Should Have Known

Asher Roth - Twitter Message[/caption]

Asher Roth is not from the Hip Hop and Urban music generation. He is just a kid who wanted to benefit of the rap music craze. He is not a good rapper and I wish people would stop trying to act like he is.

Asher got caught doing something crazy, and the sad part is that he didn’t even realize how disrepectful and offensive what he put on Twitter was. Asher knew were the comment can from, he even said it was a play on the Imus comment.

Well my friend Asher, I guess you didn’t see what happened to Imus after he made those regretful, never to be repeated again (by a white boy) comments. Since you didn’t care about the consequences, we don’t care about you!.

To anyone that supports you, I feel sorry for them.  We have to remove Asher Roth from our community for respect purposes alone. We took Asher in and gave him a pass, and this is how he treats our nation. He must suffer the same fate as Imus, since he wants to reference Imus. He said he was making fun of Don Imus, come on, your real personality came out, but it happened in a public forum.
