NEW YORK (Reuters) – News Corp has sold Myspace for $35 million, a fraction of what it paid for the once-hot social media site even as a new generation of Web-based start-ups is enjoying sky-high valuations.
Advertising company Specific Media will team with the singer Justin Timberlake to acquire Myspace in a deal that caps a tumultuous period of ownership under Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp, which swooped in to buy Myspace for $580 million in 2005.
At the time, Myspace was among the world’s most popular websites, and News Corp’s success in beating out rival Viacom Inc in a bidding war was viewed as a major victory for Murdoch. Since then, however, Facebook has eclipsed Myspace in popularity, and the deal has become a hard lesson in what can happen when a traditional media company imposes its will on a start-up.
It also shows how quickly audience — and investor — tastes can shift in the world of social networking. Indeed, Wednesday’s deal contrasts sharply with the current frenzy over social media companies, including LinkedIn, Twitter and Groupon, among investors looking for the next big thing.
To Catch a Predator host who traps sex perverts in TV stings ‘caught cheating on his wife’… by hidden cameras
He’s made his name with a controversial show that catches would-be internet sex perverts in televised stings.
But now Chris Hansen has found himself on the receiving end of his own hidden camera tactics, after the married NBC anchor was secretly filmed on an illicit date with a blonde television reporter 20 years his junior.
Hansen, 51, has allegedly been having an affair with Kristyn Caddell, a 30-year-old Florida journalist, for the last four months.
Last weekend he was recorded taking Miss Caddell on a romantic dinner at the exclusive Ritz-Carlton hotel in Manalapan, before spending the night at her Palm Beach apartment.
Hansen, who has two young sons, was caught in an undercover sting operation arranged by the National Enquirer.
Secret cameras filmed the couple as they arrived at the hotel for dinner and then drove back to her apartment – where the pair left, carrying luggage, at 8am the following day.
Hansen lives in Connecticut with his wife Mary, 53, but he has been spending more and more time in South Florida investigating the disappearance of James ‘Jimmy T’ Trindade – and allegedly sleeping with Miss Caddell.

Google’s Android mobile operating system is growing like a proverbial weed, and is poised to get a new member to the company’s vaunted Nexus family of smartphones.
Android creator Andy Rubin announced that he is now seeing 500,000 Android smartphones and tablets activated each day. That’s up from 400,000 activations Rubin copted to in May at Google I/O and 300,000 he tweeted about last December.
Rubin, who revealed the news early June 28 in this Twitter tweet, also said he is seeing a 4.4 percent week-to-week growth in handsets and tablets running the open source operating system.
The news comes one week after reports surfaced that Apple’s iPhone 4 on Verizon Wireless and the forthcoming iPhone 5 are slowing Android’s smartphone market share roll.
This dumb guy could have made some money promoting something if he had a shirt and bullhorn. Arrested for that, what a waste of an opportunity.
